Bevy of Blooms, Gardening Book Reviews

Our February, 2021 monthly meeting was held from 9:30am-11:00am on Tuesday, February 9th via zoom with 22 members in attendance. A meeting reminder with the zoom invitation was sent to members on Wednesday, February 3, and again on Sunday, February 7th. If you are not receiving these emails, please send an email to us at SCAGardenClub20@gmail.com so we can be sure you are receiving our club communications.

Our Poll of the Month was:

Can you name . . .

• three vegetables

• that can be planted by seed,

• in mid-to-late February,

• directly in the garden,

• provided the soil has warmed up?

Five of our members responded to the poll. The winners of the prize drawing were Jane Arnold, Joanne Quinn, and Sharon Royer. They each receieved a $5 gift card to Starbucks which was delivered to their doorstep! Correct answers included squash, cucumber, watermelon, corn, and beans. Remember you don't have to be correct to win, but you do need to attend the meeting to win a prize!

Our meeting line-up also included:

  • Member Sharon Royer’s presentation on her “Bevy of Blooms” – many of you met Sharon on a previous garden tour when she not only shared her flowers, she served cold lemonade! Her blooms are numerous and huge! We got her advice on how she cares for them . . . in the hopes that we can get the same results!

  • “Gardening Book Review” by Master Gardener, Gail Brandys. With thousands of gardening books available today, how do you know where to spend your time and money? Gardening books should be informative and in your area of interest. They should be enjoyable and inspiring ! And they make great gifts for any occasion - birthdays, anniversaries, Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day, etc. This Powerpoint presentation covered five of the recently-released gardening books on native plants, attracting beneficial wildlife, seed propagation and gardening in Nevada to help you decide on your next read.

We decided to create a new segment "Your Garden This Month" with advice from local experts regarding what to do in your garden in February. This advice is intended to help newcomers, those who may have let a few chores lapse over the years, or those who want to know more about what their landscaping crew should be doing for them. We did not present the segment at this month's meeting because we were running long from our first two presentations. But you can see this information in the slideshow from our meeting by clicking here. We look forward to your feedback on this segment so we know if it is worth pursuing for future months.

We are always looking for member input for future meetings . . . send us photos of your gardening highs and lows. Share what you’ve learned or seek advice from the group. If you’d like, we’ll come to your yard to snap those photos!

For something different, enjoy some unique "Leaf Art" that local citrus-grower-extraordinaire Bob Raney sent our way. His daughter found this treat on the web, with no attribution to the artist. We'd love to know who to praise! After you click on the link, be sure to scroll down to see all 21 amazing works of art!

Our cover photo for the web page this month features Iris from Sharon Royer's garden!
