Cactus Joe's Nursery

The weather is turning milder and it’s time to get out there and enjoy it! We are going to take a leap outside of our zoom comfort zone and try an outing for our March Meeting! Let’s enjoy the great outdoors at Cactus Joe’s Nursery at 10am on Tuesday, March 9th, 2021. If you’ve never been there before, you are in for a treat. If you’ve been there in years past, you will be amazed with the changes made in 2020!

AND for the first time in our club’s history, we will have simultaneous zoom access to the field trip for those who cannot attend in person! The zoom link will be sent to members via email.

Now for all the details on our field trip . . .

WHO:

You are welcome to bring family and friends - even grandchildren would enjoy this outing. There is no admission fee, so the more the merrier! It’s a great way to show your neighbors what the SCA Garden Club has to offer!

WHAT:

To quote their web-site: www.cactusjoeslasvegas.com

  • Cactus Joe’s Las Vegas Nursery is an eclectic cactus nursery and desert garden. We are Nevada’s best and largest authorized retailer of Joshua Trees. In addition to our Joshua Tree forest, you will find our grounds filled with an array of desert plants including cacti, succulents, agave, ocotillo, yucca, native Nevada plants, and so much more.

  • We also offer a huge selection of pottery, concrete statues, metal yard art, unique outdoor wooden patio furniture, decorative rainbow glass, rocks, gems, minerals and more. Cactus Joe’s Las Vegas Nursery is a must-see-it-to-believe-it place. Not your typical garden center! With our themed Asian and Western Gardens, Joshua Tree Forest, Petrified Forest, Rock Shop, Gift Shop, South Western Pottery Land, Wedding Chapel, and giant Labyrinth, Cactus Joe’s is a great place to spend the day with family and friends.

Cactus Joe is a quiet, unassuming soul who is grateful for the life that the nursery has offered him. He doesn’t like to speak about himself or his accomplishments, but he is likely to be there to say hello.

WHEN:

Let’s gather at Cactus Joes around 10am on Tuesday, March 9th. Allowing for driving time, you’ll need to leave Sun City Anthem around 9:20am. If you are running late that morning, don’t let that worry you, we’ll see you when you get there! We’ll hang out in the parking lot until about 5 minutes after the hour, then we’ll proceed into the nursery. If you are running later than that, just come through the entrance building, you’ll find us!

WHERE:

Cactus Joe’s Nursery is at 12740 Blue Diamond Rd. Las Vegas, NV 89161. It is about 20 miles from Sun City Anthem and it will take 35 to 40 minutes to get there. Your navigation system may vary your route slightly, but in general, you’ll take I-15 to Blue Diamond Road (Route 160) heading west. At the intersection with Route 159, you’ll turn right. Shortly thereafter, you’ll see Cactus Joe’s on the right hand side of the road. If you get to the Gypsum Plant or the town of Blue Diamond, you’ve gone too far.

HOW:

Drive yourself and your family and friends.

As you enter and exit the nursery, you will be indoors briefly, otherwise you are outdoors in fresh air with a view of the Spring Mountains!

Governor Sisolak mandates that everyone must wear a mask on the grounds of the nursery.

WHAT ELSE:

There are restrooms at the nursery.

The nursery property is level. The grounds are covered with dirt and fine gravel. A wheelchair should be able to navigate this area.

There are concrete tables and benches throughout the property if you need a break.

Sandwiches, Salads, wraps, smoothies, toasts, sweets, and organic produce are available at the Starseeds Farm & Market food truck run by Jessica Clark. You can learn more about her business at starseedslv@hotmail.com, website Starseedslv.com 702-427-9149. Her food truck is parked in Cactus Joe’s parking lot.

If you are up for more that day, as you leave Cactus Joe’s Nursery, continue to the right on Route 159. You’ll drive by the town of Blue Diamond, Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, Mt. Wilson, Rainbow Mountain, Red Rock National Recreation area. Stop and enjoy whatever suits you. You can head all the way to I-215 on Route 159 which becomes Charleston Boulevard. When you hit I-215, head south and return to Sun City Anthem. (If you do want to go inside the Red Rock National Recreation Area, be sure to make a reservation for admission that day. )

Please RSVP to SCAGardenClub20@gmail.com so we know roughly how many people to expect that day.

Remember to respond to the “Poll of the Month” at SCAGardenClub20@gmail.com by Monday night, March 8th for a chance to win a prize. You don’t have to be correct to win, you just need to enter to qualify for the prize drawing. This month’s poll is:
