Nevada's Native Plants for the Garden

On November 11, Gail Brandys will illustrate Nevada’s native plants and discuss the benefits of growing them, such as their tolerance for our alkaline and nutrient-poor soils, limited rainfall, and summer heat/high UV radiation. An expert on plant toxins, she completed the Master Gardener training program through the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension in Las Vegas in 2017 and has been an avid gardener for many decades on the East Coast, Midwest, and for the past 15 years in Las Vegas. She always brings a large assortment of free seeds to distribute and is a wealth of information on the gems of the Mojave Desert.  Next month Alec Pridgeon will present an updated reprise of a comprehensive talk with new videos on Nevada’s hummingbirds and their favorite nectar-bearing flowers. Learn what plants attract them to your garden, what feeders to buy, and why Sir David Attenborough has ranked them among the most spectacular creatures on Earth.

Elections for officers for 2025 will be held at this month’s meeting, so your vote is important. To ensure continuity in programs and events, current officers will be on hand next year to offer advice and other assistance. The personnel of our House Call Committee will return next year as well to offer garden visits for members. Be sure and attend the SCA Club Fair in Anthem Center on Saturday, December 7, to renew your membership easily and enjoy the perks that come along with it, such as the free house calls and refreshments at meetings.

We meet in the Penn/Morris/Nelson Rooms of the Independence Center from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the second Monday of each month except July and August. Free coffee, tea, and cookies are available from 9:00 a.m. Sun City residents are welcome to attend two meetings/year without joining. Dues for 2025 are $15; checks may be made payable exactly to: Sun City Anthem Community Association, Inc. with “Garden Club’ on the memo line. Enrollment forms are also available at the Anthem Center kiosk and on our website (https://garden.scaclub.org) and can be placed in the Garden Club mailbox located outside Anthem's Fitness Center along with your check payable as above. Feel free to email any questions about the Club to its president, Dr. Alec Pridgeon (apridg1@gmail.com)
