Growing Herbs presented by Glenda Bona, Master Gardener.
At our meeting in September, no less than seven (7) Master Gardeners led by Glenda Bona will explain different herbs and how to grow and use them. They will show us how to make herb sticks, and everyone in attendance will enjoy assembling one to take home at no charge. Making scents for no cents makes sense! Next month we’ll be traveling by coach to the beautiful botanical gardens and museums of Springs Preserve in Las Vegas. It is not too late to sign up by enrolling on our website, filling out a flyer at this month’s meeting, contacting any Club leader on our website, or simply sending an email to SCAGardenClub20@gmail.com. Rounding out the year, in November Master Gardener Gail Brandys will talk about dangerous toxins in the environment and also many plants to keep you and your pets out of the ER. (Note: November’s meeting will be held in the Delaware Room in Anthem Center.) And then in December, back in our regular rooms, how to care for those misunderstood and underappreciated cycads (“sago palms”) in your yard and their beastly, R-rated sex life will take center stage.
We are officially launching our House Call program in September as a benefit for Club members only. One or two representatives from the House Call Committee can visit gardens upon request to answer questions about the plants and how to grow them, which can be helpful to new residents and especially those who have moved into a desert environment for the first time. The request form can be filled out and submitted on our website (https://garden.scaclub.org) after logging in. We will also have flyers at every general meeting that can be filled out and turned in right there or else deposited in the Club’s mailbox (see location below). In providing this service, we feel that we are only neighbors helping neighbors, so there is absolutely no charge for the visit, and tipping is not allowed.
We meet in the Penn/Morris/Nelson Rooms of the Independence Center from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the second Monday of each month except July and August. Free coffee, tea, and cookies are available from 9:00 a.m. Dues are a real bargain at only $10/year, payable exactly to: Sun City Anthem Community Association, Inc. with “Garden Club’ on the memo line. Residents may attend two meetings as guests prior to joining at any meeting. Enrollment forms are also available at the Anthem Center kiosk and on our new website (see above) and can be placed in the Garden Club mailbox located outside Anthem's Fitness Center along with your check payable as above. Feel free to email any questions about the Club to its president, Dr. Alec Pridgeon (apridg1@gmail.com).
