NO Meeting in July - Sheltering from Heat!

THERE ARE NO CLUB MEETINGS IN JULY or AUGUST ... ENJOY THE SUMMER. WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU IN SEPTEMBER.

The SCA Garden Club met on May 8 for a carpool tour of seven of our members’ gardens, highlighting the diversity of interests – roses, fruits and vegetables, hydroponics, herbs, cacti and succulents, hummingbird plants and other ornamentals. A few truly spectacular plants and flowers seen on the tour are pictured here. Marvel at all that can be successfully grown, even in this desert climate with temperature extremes and alkaline soil. We are here to show you how.

Our revamped website, www.garden.scaclub.org, has now been officially launchedIt’s chock-full of useful resources and benefits for members only, such as the Gardener’s Marketplace, an online way to donate, buy, and sell plants and garden-related products here in Sun City Anthem.

We shelter from the heat in July and August but resume our program on September 11 with a talk on growing herbs by Master Gardener Glenda Bona. On October 9, we’ll be traveling by coach to the beautiful botanical gardens of the Springs Preserve in Las Vegas. Rounding out the year, in November Master Gardener Gail Brandys will talk about dangerous toxins in plants and the environment to keep you and your pets out of the ER. And then in December, cycads (“sago palms”) and their startling, R-rated sex life will take center stage. Talks by experts on a wide range of horticultural topics are already lined up for early next year: basic principles of gardening in January, hydroponics in February, and cacti and succulents in March. Don’t miss out!

Club meetings are normally held in the Morris/Nelson Rooms of the Independence Center from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the second Monday of each month. Free coffee, tea, and cookies are available from 9:00 a.m. Dues are a real bargain at only $10/year, payable exactly to: Sun City Anthem Community Assn, Inc. Residents may attend two meetings as guests prior to joining at any meeting. Enrollment forms are also available at the Anthem Center kiosk and on our new website (see above) and can be placed in the Garden Club mailbox located outside Anthem's Fitness Center along with your check payable as above. Feel free to email any questions about the Club to its president, Dr. Alec Pridgeon (apridg1@gmail.com)
