Growing Roses in Southern Nevada

Save the date! Monday, April 10, 2023 at 9:30am at the INDEPENDENCE Center.  Besides our expert speakers every month, the SCA Garden Club has scheduled a tour of many of our members’ gardens in May, followed in June by a catered luncheon and slide show from the tour. Come October 9, we will be traveling by coach to the beautiful botanical gardens of the Springs Preserve in Las Vegas. This fall we will hear about growing herbs, dangerous plant toxins, and the indecent, even raunchy sex life of cycads (popularly but wrongly known as sago palms). All of that and a new website in development, filled with useful resources. See what you’re missing? There is still time to join and enjoy the benefits of this year’s program.

Our speaker for the general meeting on April 10 will be Master Gardener Dr. Judith Kafantaris. She is Chair of the Rose Garden Committee of the University of  Nevada Reno Extension and runs their Help Desk. Dr. Kafantaris has grown all types of roses in Indiana, California, and Nevada and is currently President of the South Valley Rose Society in Las Vegas. There is no better person to answer your questions about planting, pruning, fertilizing, and choosing which rose hybrids will survive, even thrive, in our soils and climate.

We meet in the Morris/Nelson Rooms of the Independence Center from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the second Monday of each month. Coffee, tea, and cookies are available from 9:00 a.m. Dues are a bargain at $10/year, payable exactly to: Sun City Anthem Community Assn, Inc. Residents may attend two meetings as guests prior to joining at any meeting. Enrollment forms are also available at the Anthem Center kiosk and on the Club's SCA website and can be placed in the Garden Club mailbox located outside Anthem's Fitness Center along with your check payable as above. We invite you to email any questions about the Club to its president, Dr. Alec Pridgeon (apridg1@gmail.com). Hope to see you at our next meeting!
