Growing Palms In The Desert

Save the date! Monday, February 13th, 2023 at 9:30am at the INDEPENDENCE Center. We are excited to offer a slate of fabulous lectures and activities this year. Many of our speakers are associated with the University of Nevada, Reno Extension Master Gardener program and will share their tips on cultivating palms, fruit trees, roses, and herbs, even in this desert climate. The coordinator of the program will alert us to an array of plant toxins, many of which you would never suspect but definitely need to know to avert a medical emergency. As always, we plan to tour several gardens of our members, share a catered luncheon, take an easy bus trip to a botanical garden, and still have time left over for a few surprises. Watch our SCA website for up-to-the-minute news, events, classes, and informative resources.

Our Master Gardener speaker for the meeting on February 13 will be Dr. M. L. Robinson. He has had a 22-year-career in environmental horticulture and related fields as an Associate Professor/Specialist for the University of Nevada and the University of Florida. The title of his talk is “Growing Palms in the Desert.” Dr. Robinson is also a herpetologist and can tell us what snakes we might encounter in our gardens and what to do if we see or hear one. Rule 1: Don’t try to pick it up!

We meet in the Morris/Nelson Rooms of the Independence Center from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the second Monday of each month. Coffee, tea, and pastries are available from 9:00 a.m. Dues are a bargain at $10/year, payable exactly to: Sun City Anthem Community Assn, Inc. Residents may attend two meetings as guests prior to joining at any meeting. Otherwise, enrollment forms are available at the Anthem Center kiosk and on the Club's SCA website and can be placed in the Garden Club mailbox located outside Anthem's Fitness Center along with your check payable as above. We invite you to email any questions about the Club to its president, Dr. Alec Pridgeon (apridg1@gmail.com).
